The Pilates Method

A lifetime’s work

Pilates is more than a collection of exercises. It is a progressive method — a practice of strength, alignment, awareness and flow.

Traditional Pilates apparatus in York Pilates Space

Tradition, still evolving

Joseph Pilates developed his corrective system over decades, publishing Your Health in 1934 and Return to Life Through Contrology ten years later. Long before matwork became familiar, his New York studio was filled with specialist apparatus: Reformers, Cadillac, Chairs and Towers.

The method first found a devoted audience among dancers and athletes, then grew as clinicians recognised how balanced, whole-body movement could support rehabilitation and long-term wellbeing.

York Pilates Space continues this lineage through MK Pilates International, while drawing on current anatomical and somatic understanding. We are a busy teaching studio, a teacher-training centre and a member of the Society for the Pilates Method.

Practising regularly brings gradual, positive changes to strength and flexibility — and to the way we feel at home in ourselves.
